STAND FOR LANDS

Saving America’s Public Lands

In December 2017 President Donald Trump issued an executive order to shrink two national monuments in Utah, slashing the area of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in half and cutting Bears Ears National Monument by 85 percent. These cuts are the largest-ever reductions to our public lands made by any administration in U.S. history. Starting Feb. 2, mining operations will be allowed to begin in the newly opened areas of Bears Ears.

We believe Trump wants to slash more protections for many other iconic national monuments, including marine monuments, and in particular to significantly shrink Gold Butte National Monument in Nevada and Cascade Siskiyou in California and Oregon.

These moves are completely unacceptable — but we’re not powerless. The Center is suing the Trump administration over these illegal actions, but in the meantime, Congress is trying to move Trump’s anti-public-lands agenda forward.

If Trump, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and anti-public-lands Republicans in Congress get their way, we’ll see more monuments handed over to corporate polluters, and no more public lands protected for our children and grandchildren.

Current anti-public-lands legislation:

There are three anti-monument bills currently making their way through the House of Representatives:

  • H.R. 3990: Guts the Antiquities Act by creating new law that gives Trump the authority to cut monuments
  • H.R. 4558: Authorizes Trump’s cuts to Grand Staircase-Escalante
  • H.R. 4532: Authorizes the cuts to Bears Ears

Find out where each of these bills is in the legislative process.
