"Polar Bear" to Greet Obama in California With Urgent Plea: Stop Shell's Arctic Drilling

"Frostpaw" Highlights Pollution Risks at President's San Francisco Visit

What: Frostpaw the polar bear and supporters from the Center for Biological Diversity and Greenpeace will greet President Barack Obama on the street outside the Julia Morgan Ballroom in San Francisco to deliver this message: Stop Shell’s Arctic drilling. Frostpaw and his friends will ask the president’s supporters to urge the White House to halt Shell’s plans to begin Arctic oil exploration this summer.

When: Wednesday, June 6, from noon to 1 p.m.

Where: Outside the Julia Morgan Ballroom, 465 California St., San Francisco

Photo/Video/Interviews: An oceans expert will be available for interviews

Background: Unless President Obama reverses course, oil drilling will begin in the pristine Arctic Ocean this summer — opening this fragile home of polar bears, walruses, seals and native communities to dangerous new oil exploration and subjecting our rapidly warming climate to even more greenhouse gas pollution.

Obama has already given tentative approval to Shell's Arctic drilling plan, but citizens and Frostpaw the polar bear plan to use Obama’s visit to San Francisco on Wednesday to urge him to stop Shell from drilling in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas off Alaska’s north shore.
