Constituents Rally to Urge Arizona Rep. McSally to Oppose Attacks on National Monuments

TUCSON, Ariz.— Constituents of Rep. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.) will rally outside her Tucson office at 4 p.m. Thursday to demand that she oppose a bill that would overturn the Antiquities Act and resist other attacks on our public lands.

H.R. 3990, sponsored by Rep. Rob Bishop (R-Utah), would severely limit the creation of new national monuments, which protect our most culturally and naturally important public lands. It also would allow presidents to shrink existing national monuments.

“McSally needs to take a stand against this unprecedented attack on America’s public lands,” said Ryan Beam, public lands campaigner at the Center for Biological Diversity. “McSally seems to recognize the economic value and scenic beauty of Arizona’s public lands. If she truly values these treasured landscapes, she’ll vote against Bishop’s dangerous bill.”

McSally recently announced that she plans to become the first member of Congress to hike the 800 mile-long Arizona Trail. As she completes the trail section-by-section over the coming years, most of McSally’s time will be spent on federal public lands, including Saguaro and Grand Canyon national parks. Both of these national parks were originally protected as national monuments.

“We’re impressed with McSally's commitment to complete the 800 miles of the Arizona Trail,” said Kristen Randall of Indivisible Southern Arizona. “As she hikes the beautiful landscapes that her district and the state hold, we hope she’ll consider the damage that a ‘yes’ vote on H.R. 3990 would do.”
